Update from the Home Front

We're settling back home after wonderful travel for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Here's the news:

Rolling Over. Rowan rolls over now when properly motivated by a toy he wants to reach. While in Georgia, Aunt Julie found Rowan on his tummy after a nap, and since I had put him down on his back the evidence was clear that Rowan had turned over on his own. We've seen both tummy-to-back and back-to-tummy action.

Food. Green beans, squash, carrots, peas, and sweet potatoes get thumbs-up. Bananas, too, are a favorite. Pears and prunes get sour faces and fussiness. Apples came yesterday for the first time, and got a little scrunchy face but then were welcomed. We shall see...

Sitting. Rowan can now sit, if properly positioned, on his own for several seconds before toppling. He doesn't seem to mind rolling right off to one side or the other. We usually laugh about it.

Already Outgrowing... Well, Rowan is outgrowing lots of stuff. He's right at the weight limit for his infant car seat, so we ordered the new one which came in yesterday. It'll take him all the way up to 65 pounds. It still has to be rear-facing until he's 1 year old, then it converts to face forward. Another piece of baby gear that is dangerously close to going back in its box in the basement is the swing! Rowan can nearly stretch up and grab the little plush toys on the built-in mobile. And even on its highest speed, keeping Rowan's 20-something-pound body in motion is obviously not coming easy. :-)

The End of Swaddling. It's because he rolls over now, and it would seem dangerous to have him flipped onto his stomach with both arms trapped inside the swaddle. Plus, another half inch around and the velcro Kiddopotamus swaddlers, key to nighttime peace up to this point, would simply not go around the darling even though we already bought the biggest size. The good news is Rowan adjusted quickly to freedom of limbs, and to stay warm he gets dressed in a thin sleeper plus a fleece sleeper at bedtime. But would you believe, we might have to go buy size 12-month sleepers soon? The 9-month ones are getting tight in the toes!
